Mughal Art, Three Extremely Rare and Fine Mughal Carved Ivory Furniture Stuffing Elements, Probably Agra or Delhi, India, 17th Century.

The beautiful Ivory slabs are of a rectangular form neatly and deeply carved with scrolls and floral motives to be used as decorating inlay elements on wood or furniture.
Our very high quality carved Ivory Panels have the same features and quality of the amazing Mughal Jali work executed during the peak of the Mughal era in India.

The Jali (Jaali Screen or Panel) is a form of performed Art and Architecture executed on different materials. Stone was the main durable source such as Marble and sandstone, the stone was carved and pierced into a specified Islamic and Indo-Islamic ornamental pattern such as calligraphy, floral and geometrical patterns or a mixture of different patterns to create a latticed form screen usually used in decorating buildings walls and also used as partitions to separate different parts of buildings such as in mosques.

For an incredibly fine quality examples of Jali stone Screens that have survived are: -
-The marble Jali screen around the Royal Cenotaphs in the Taj Mahal.
-The amazing Jali panels at the Sidi Saiyyed mosque in Ahmedabad.
-The Jali screen at the tomb of Salim Chishti in Fatehpur Sikri.
-The Jali at Babi Ka Maqbara, (cemitry) Aurangabad.

For a very similar carving please see the Jali Screens surrounding the cenotaph of Mumtaz Mahal the wife of the Mughal Empower Shah Johan, at the Taj Mahal that was made after her death in 1631.
