Description

 

This exquisite wine-colored Taqsireh jacket, dating to around 1880, showcases the rich textile heritage of Bethlehem during the Ottoman Empire.

 

Made from hand-loomed, plain felted wool fabric likely from Aleppo or Homs in Syria, it features intricate coaching embroidered techniques in vibrant shades of orange, black, blue, and yoke scarlet cords.

Nicknamed the “taqșireh mushajjara” or “arboreal jacket” due to its natural, floral-inspired embroidery along the front, back, shoulders, and sides, the jacket stands out with its tartan lining and vibrant scarlet cord embroidery accented and additionally embroidered with details by silk threads of various shades of pink, blue, purple, white, orange and green.

 

Dimensions

The jacket measures 95 cm in width including the sleeves and 48 cm in height.

Despite minor moth bites and slight damage to the lining, it remains in excellent condition, likely worn only once on a wedding night and carefully preserved as a sentimental keepsake.
