Description
Undoubtedly, this magnificent crucifix was crafted during the peak of the finest period of mother-of-pearl production in the Holy Land. It is made from finely cut and intricately assembled pieces of mother of pearl, set on a sturdy olivewood stand and base.
Likely originating from Jerusalem or Bethlehem during the Ottoman Empire around the 1900s, it is divided into three main sections.
The upper part features a depiction of the crucifixion, with a gilt metal figure of Jesus mounted on the cross. The middle and lower sections house three-dimensional dioramas protected by glazed, lockable compartments. These dioramas depict emotional Christian scenes, such as Jesus lying on Mary’s lap and being mourned by his disciples. The base of the crucifix is engraved with the word “Jerusalem” in mother of pearl.
The crucifix is encased in a later, highly presentable glazed wooden casket, likely commissioned in Italy in 1917.
The back of the crucifix features an Italian inscription with the date, marking when the exterior casket was crafted to house and protect the crucifix.
